Abstract
A retrospective study of 176 cancer patients who received inferior vena cava (IVC) filters, most often due to contraindications to anticoagulation or treatment failure. Survival after filter placement varied sharply by disease stage, and was substantially shorter in patients with advanced-stage solid tumors than in those with early-stage disease. The findings suggest that filter placement offers limited benefit in advanced cancer, and that tumor stage and life expectancy should guide the decision to insert a filter.
