What is this procedure?
A modern technique for treating small, early-stage breast tumors by freezing them locally through a fine image-guided needle, without the need for surgical excision or general anesthesia.
How the procedure works
Before
- Precise imaging (mammogram or MRI) to determine tumor size and location
- Diagnosis confirmed by a prior tissue biopsy
- Long fasting usually not required (local anesthesia)
During
- Local anesthesia in the breast area
- Insertion of a fine cryoablation needle under ultrasound or CT guidance
- The tumor is frozen at extremely low temperatures to destroy it directly
- The procedure takes about 30–60 minutes
After & Recovery
- Usually discharged the same day
- Cold compress and simple pain relief if needed
- Follow-up imaging to confirm the tumor has fully resolved
